Neat War Date autograph cut from a Union Document as Captain in the 18th US Infantry early War. Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. During the Mexican War, he was a member of the Brady Guards and with the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army as a Captain in the 18th US Infantry. He rose to the rank of Colonel in command of the 14th Michigan Infantry, serving in the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and during the Atlanta Campaign. For meritorious service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of the US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. Remaining in the Regular Army as a Major, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 10th U S Infantry on August 1, 1891. In 1904, he was brevetted Brigadier General by President Theodore Roosevelt.
