When the strategic City of Plymouth, North Carolina was re-taken by Rebel General Hoke's army April, 1864, the Union forces including Private Calvin Deiffenbacher and his 440 comrades of the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry were surrendered. Most of the men were sent to Andersonville Prison, Georgia where over half died. An Original Union Army Volunteer Enlistment for Calvin O Dieffenbacher, given at Plymouth, North Carolina June 1, 1864 as Hospital Steward.

Signed by Dieffenbacher at Plymouth, NC and also by Lt William C. The 1p 8 11 ptd ink Enlistment bears the Federal eagle logo and is also signed on the left edge by Lt Nathan S Barstow, at Plymouth NC as Mustering Officer. LT Barstow served 3 years with the 24th Mass Infantry, dying of disease at New Berne, May, 1864. Edge wear, cuts, age stains, tears, aid free archival repair to folds and edges. My resources do not show whether Hospital Steward was a captive at Andersonville or another location.
