General James Clay Rice enlisted and served in the 44th New York "Ellsworth's Avengers" zouave unit, rising to command. He was promoted to brigadier general for his heroic service in taking command of the 3rd Brigade, 5th Corp Corp that was defending Little Round Top, when it's commander Colonel Strong Vincent was killed. The Brigade incl the 44th NY, 20the Maine & 83rd Pennsylavnia. Following the Battle he congratulated Joshua Chamberlain for his actions on Little Round Top. The following year, General Rice was mortally wounded during the Battle of Spottsylvania, dying on the Battlefield while in command of the 2nd Brigade His dying words were "Turn me over that I may die with my face to the enemy".
An Original Civil War general order, written in ink, issued at HQ 2nd Brigade, October 15, 1863 by General Rice commending his men for the admirable manner in which the Brigade, despite many of them being new recruits, endured the hard march including a forced march of 38 miles, recalling Napoleon's maxim re the importance of enduring such marches. 1p 8 x 5 ink. Age stains, edge wear, and folds, Overall Vg. Thus appears to have been carried in a soldier's pocket and then mailed.
