

In 1863 He was promoted Brigadier General of Volunteers and then to Colonel of the 18th US Regular Army Infantry. In 1866 during the Red Cloud War, Carriington was sent to build Fort Phil Kearny, Wyoming, assigned to protect the miners flooding into the West during the Montana Gold Rush.
Carrington had ordered Captain William J Fetterman of the 18th US to protect soldiers on duty outside the fort, but Fetterman disobeyed his orders and lured on by the warriors, Fetterman and his command were ambushed and massacred by the Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, led by Chief Red Cloud and Crazy Horse. An original softcover book entitled "Soldier and Preacher 1758 and 1878 BeeBee", a 32pp bio of the Reverend James BeeBee, a Revolutionary War ancestor of Carrington. The cover is ink presented by "Henry Beebe Carrington, US Army Yale Class of 1845" at Hyde Park, Mass, July 18.
