General Gilman Marston, a native iof Exeter, New Hampshire was a notable citizen- In 1861 he recruited the 2nd New Hampshire Volunteers, and led them at Bull Run where he was severely wounded. He survived and led his command from the 1862 Richmond Campaign, at Fredericksburg where he was promoted to Brigadier General. Despite his age and the wounds received at Bull Run he continued in command from Chancellorsville through Cold Harbor to Petersburg where he was again wounded, but remained on active duty until the End of the War. An Original letter from General Marston at Exeter, NH, February 16, 1889, a year before his death, to his old comrade General Joab Patterson, also 2nd New Hampshire (and Civil War Provost Marshal at Point Lookout which General Marston had established). Re politics and plan to visit with Patterson at Dover, NH.

2pp 8 x 5 ink. The letter is very legible as is his scrawled signature. Minor age stains, Overall VG.
