The Battle of Fort Stedman was fought on March 25, 1865, during the final weeks of The Civil War. The Union Army fortification in the siege lines around Petersburg, Virginia, was assaulted by General John Gordon's troops after Gordon reported the poor condition of the line. General Lee ordered the assault to divert the Federal Army's attention while the Army of Northern Virginia evacuated Petersburg. The assault failed despite General John Gordon's report. An Original Civil War Federal Army Report made 2 months earlier by Captain John M Deane, 29th Massachusetts, January 25, 1865 in which he reports that inspection of the lines around Forts Stedman and Hascall found a number of the rifle pits unoccupied, and needed to be rebuilt, and requested repairs on the collapsed breastworks, with many of the front logs of the work "thrown away".

He also suggests videttes be built. The report on lined paper was retained by Captain Deane, with the original sent to the 57th Massachusetts Officer of the Day. Captain John Milton Deane was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic defense of the Fort Stedman. The Report came from the estate of Captain Deane of Freetown, Massachusetts who became a teacher after the War. 3pp 8 x 11 ink Report with minor edge wear, ageing, Overall Exc Condition.
