Civil War-Dated General Orders Sent to George McClellan After Battle of Antietam

  

Civil War-dated manuscript document forwarding General Orders No. 126 to General George McClellan requesting he assign officers to artillery batteries one month following the Battle of Antietam. CIVIL WAR-DATED MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT FORWARDING GENERAL ORDERS NO. 126 TO GENERAL GEORGE MCCLELLAN REQUESTING HE ASSIGN OFFICERS TO ARTILLERY BATTERIES ONE MONTH FOLLOWING THE BATTLE OF ANTIETAM.

Reads in full: Adjutant Generals Office, Washington, October 20th, 1862, Major General Geo. McClellan, Commanding Army of the Potomac, Charlestown, Va. General, In view of the numerous requests now being made by Commanders in the field, that Artillery Batteries in service may retain the Extra Lieutenants, Sergeants, and Corporals. Such Officers however in Batteries which have only four guns, ar are so reduced in strength as to be Equivalent to four gun Batteries, will be mustered out of service from the date of receipt of the said Order if such has not already been done. In all future inspection of the troops under your command the above decision will apply, and the office making such inspections will be governed by the provisions of General Orders No. 126 with the latitude expressed herein. IN VIEW OF THE NUMEROUS REQUESTS NOW BEING MADE BY COMMANDERS IN THE FIELD, THAT ARTILLERY BATTERIES IN SERVICE MAY RETAIN THE EXTRA LIEUTENANTS, SERGEANTS, AND CORPORALS.
