General Lorenzo Thomas was Adjutant General of the US Army during the Civil War except for the last 2 years of the War when Lincoln appointed him on special assignment to recruit African-American troops in the Military Division of the Mississippi from 1863 to 1865. Thomas became a powerful advocate of Colored Troops at a time when many Union commanders were sceptical of their potential.
