Many folding maps (all present). Tight bindings; exlibrary with some marks; clean pages; moderate wear; nicer than usual. These volumes are not so much a military biography as a detailed military tribute.

That Badeau served on Grant's staff and deeply admired the commanding general reduces the degree of objectivity, but does not prevent the work from being useful. The first volume contains a brief biographical sketch of Grant's heritage and begins in earnest with his early exploits in the war.

The coverage carries through early 1864. The second and third volumes cover the period of the Wilderness campaign through the end of the war and do so in elegant detail, owing to Badeau's role as aide-de-camp during the last year of the war.
