1864 Civil War 68th US Colored Regiment Letter to General Montgomery C. This document is one of a few I have from George H. Letter written to General Meigs regarding the return of equipage and mentions how Mr. Bean reached out to more experienced officer for guidance in his matters.

Bean was a 1st Lt of the 68th US Colored Troop Regiment. Bean was captured by the Confederacy. While captured, his superiors considered him to have abandon to the other side and initiated court marshal. Once they learned of his capture, they arranged a prisoner swap and reinstated him to his original rank.

Shortly after, he retired from the military.
