We are offering in this listing one original 1860's Civil War cdv sepia albumen photo of General Don Carlos Buell. The back has the photographer's marking Published by E. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York. From photographic negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery.

Buell was born on 23 March 1818 & died on 19 November 1898. Buell was a career United States Army officer who fought in the Seminole War, the Mexican-American War, and the American Civil War. Buell led Union armies in two great Civil War battles-Shiloh and Perryville. The nation was angry at his failure to defeat the outnumbered Confederates after Perryville, or to secure East Tennessee. Historians concur that he was brave and industrious, and a master of logistics, but was too cautious and too rigid to meet the great challenges he faced in 1862. Buell was relieved of field command in late 1862 and made no more significant military contributions. This cdv is one part of a 98 piece collection of cdv photos that was formed during the Civil War and slightly after by General George Hampden Crosman & his wife. The Crosman album contained a number of scarce & elusive cdvs of Union generals as well as a number of cdvs of Union generals with original autographs. This cdv measures 3 13/16 inches tall by 2 13/32 inches wide.

The front bottom edge of the matt has an, in period, penciled identification in an unknown hand. There is some minor edge wear to the matt & slight signs of age. There is a tiny scuff at the extreme top left corner of the matt.

The back of the matt shows signs on the surface paper over the photographer's marking that a revenue stamp was once removed. There is some irregular, in period, trim to the bottom border of the matt performed to expedite album insertion.
