On the cdv back is written in script Gen. Buell" and below that is printed by hand: "Don Carlos Buell Maj.

Printed on the back is the photographer's mark which reads, Charles D. "Specialite, " 587 Broadway, New York.

The corners were trimmed in period to facilitate album insertion. Buell is shown standing in full uniform with his sword. The cdv measures 2 1/2 inches by 4 1/8 inches. There is a small bit of extra paper on the right edge of the mat where the mat didn't separate completely, in the original making of the card, when the card was cut. There are two very tiny surface pinpricks on the top front that do not go through and can be seen only on very close examination. The top right corner of the image has a minute flaw.
