Congressman New York 1857-61 & 1893-95. A longtime New York politician, Sickles is famous for having murdered Francis Barton Key II, his young wifes lover and the son of Francis Scott Key, across the street from the Executive Mansion in 1859. A plea of temporary insanity was entered by his attorney, future War Secretary Edwin Stanton, and Sickles was acquitted of the charge.

He lost a leg and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his action in the Peach Orchard at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. New York, June 6, 1879. Lightly and evenly toned, with cross-cut and hole-punch cancellations near the signature, some brushing of ink to several characters throughout, and a few edge nicks.
