Much of the book concerns Ruslings letters while the remainder is his recollections of famous leaders. He writes a seperate small chapter on each of the 11 leaders he met, the list includes Lincoln, Grant, Lee, Andrew Johnson, Sherman, McClellan, etc. Rusling spent most the Civil War as a Quartermaster at the regimental, brigade, division and corps level. He was both the quartermaster inspector and the assistant quartermaster for the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the Cumberland. The author rose to the rank of Brigadier General (by Brevet), United Sates Volunteers. Promoted to Brigadier General in 1866, he was an observant and entertaining writer, and is notable for witnessing personally and knowing most of the major events and personalities of the Civil War.
